KARIYUSHI wear
Kariyushi wear is the official business attire worn during the summer months in Okinawa Prefecture. Kariyushi is characteristic of Okinawa's traditional crafts including Bingata, Ryukyu Kasuri, and Yaeyama Minsa, and is quite popular amongst tourists. At the Kyushu-Okinawa G8 Summit held in Okinawa in 2000, the leaders of many countries took part in wearing kariyushi wear. Today, kariyushi wear has evolved to include a variety of designs and styles, and it is commonly accepted as appropriate attire for a wide range of events including wedding ceremonies and funerals!
HISTORY
The origin of Kariyushi wear dates back to 1970, when the late Sadazo Miyazato, then chairman of the Okinawa Prefectural Tourism Federation, came up with the idea of launching the Okinawa shirt under the name "Okinawa Shirt" to "make the hot summer in Okinawa more comfortable and to promote Okinawa as a tourist destination.
At that time, Okinawa shirts were mostly decorated with patterns of hibiscus, dayago, Ryukyu bingata (a traditional Okinawan handicraft) and Ryukyu kasuri (a traditional Okinawan fabric).
